The beginning… story time of why I started this space for you!
I remember getting my first period and going to my mom and telling her about it. She was very supportive and told me, it will now come every month and she had given me pads to use. I understood that once I get my period I will be able to have children one day as it was a right of passage, so to speak, into womanhood.
What I did not know is that the menstrual cycle is more than just getting a bleed every month; it is actually responsible for many body, brain functions and changes as we go through our teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.
Each era brings its own new challenges, experiences, and opportunities to connect with our body that we tend to dismiss and not pay attention to. More so than anything, I viewed my period as an event that happens every month. My period was heavy, I did notice a change in my track and field performance, but never attributed it to my period. My journey changed when I started noticing my period becoming irregular in my late 20s. I thought “hmm, maybe it's related to seasonal changes.”, but I kept going with my eating, exercise habits and lack of stress management. I would have never thought it would be related to my over exercising and undereating habits. On November 10th, 2021 was my last regular period till 65 days later and this is where my journey of fixing my period and connecting to my body has begun.
I wanted to take action to understand my body and fix the irregularity, as my intuition was telling me something is off. I started listening to podcasts, reading books and playing around with different diets, eating habits and continuing to exercise as I did. Things got worse, my skin was changing and my hair was falling out. I then decided to pursue a functional medicine course and work with a naturopath to investigate what is happening to my body. To tell you the truth, I was scared to find out what was happening to my body and had the fear of not being able to conceive. I am happy I pulled the trigger and took a leap into the hormone world. I have learned that my estrogen, my signaling hormones from my brain to my ovaries, and my iron, were very low. Thankfully, my progesterone levels were normal. I learned that my intermittent fasting, my over exercising and undereating protein, carbs and fats in addition to stress and emotionally feeling stuck, created the perfect storm for my hormones to change. My body was trying to communicate with me for a long time and I was dismissing the signals.
I skipped through a lot of the hardships in my story, which I will dive into in the future. My own experience has opened up my eyes to the changes that happen in women’s life and their body. It opened up my eyes to the issues of women suffering in silence and normalizing what they feel. As a physiotherapist specialising in pelvic floor, my mission has grown to an integrative approach to encompass women’s health and the pillars of health including menstruation, up-bringing, emotions, feelings, sleep, food, hydrations, activity, stress and beyond. I want to be the supportive pillar for others that I did not have throughout my journey to guide, to educate, and to re-build that body connection and communication.
It should not come to the point of having an irregular period for me to take action, because clearly there were signs present before that I did not listen to or know about. I want to cultivate a proactive approach to empower you to feel good, fear less and be confident in your body and know what to do when your body is communicating with you. Hence, I created this space to help lay the foundation for lifelong strength and balance from your 20s and 30s, to help women rebalance during pregnancy and postpartum, perimenopause and menopause, and to assist women thrive beyond menopause.
I do it by integrating my skills, knowledge and personal experience I have cultivated throughout my life. I want us to work together to connect you to your body, mind, emotions, hormones and build resilience, understanding and compassion for yourself.
For Women in their 20s: Is the time to lay down the foundation for lifelong strength, endurance and balance.
In your teens, your body is regulating, hormones are balancing out, your metabolism is strong and your body can thrive on doing less from strength training perspective and do more with less rest. Learning to listen to your body will create a supportive environment and foundation for the rest of your life. Learning about how your body works, your pelvic floor, your menstrual cycle, and establishing a strong mind- body relationship can help prevent common issues later in life- like pelvic pain, incontinence, injuries that turn chronic such as low back, hip and shoulder pain.
What we focus on together:
Education about your unique body that includes a full analysis of your pelvic floor, hormones, bowels/gut health, stress, emotional and mental well-being
Movement techniques to address any symptoms you may have
Core and full body strength, balance, endurance and power exercises
